How to Clean Make Up Brushes

Yucky, Dirty Brushes

  1.  You will need dirty brushes, a small bowl of water, baby shampoo, a paper towel, and a hand towel.  I use baby shampoo because it is very gentle. You can also use olive oil or just regular shampoo.
  2. Mix cleansing solution into the water.
  3. Dip brush tips into bowl and press against the sides.  You want to do this to get make up out of the  bristles.  Remember to avoid getting the ferrule... in the long run this can damage your brush.
  4. Okay, so once you've gone through a lot of brushes your bowl may need to be dumped out.  Also remember to blot your brushes on a paper towel to ensure you have the most product out.
  5. After you are done getting product out... its time to rinse.  To save water; rinse many brushes at once.
  6. Make sure you rinse the brushes well.  I separate the bristles on my bigger brushes while rinsing.
  7. Towel dry!  Make sure you take moisture off of the handle and ferrule.
  8. Shape your brushes!  This will dictate how they will look when they are dried. So if you want to make sure your pencil brush has a nice point... now is the time to ensure it.
  9. Lay the brushes down to dry.  You want to avoid keeping them upright because the moisture will go straight to the ferrule which will only diminish the lifetime of your brush.  I let mine dry over night and by the next day they are ready for use!
Hope this tutorial helped!!! :)

Getting Ready for the Holiday Season

OMG... this year has literally flown by. Its already well in to November and next thing you know we'll be in 2012 wondering if it's truly our last year on Earth. lol  I don't know about the rest of you but, the holidays are stressful for me.   Two reasons: I work in retail & I have a big family.  I turn into a robot around this time and there is no coming back until about Jan. 15th.  Over the years, I have learned some survival skills to get me through so,  if you work in retail or just feel over loaded with holiday shopping... KEEP READING

Kim's Ultimate Holiday Survival Guide
  1. Have a lot of things to do?  MAKE A LIST.  Really, it helps get you sorted.  Also, think efficient. Do you need to go to Target to pick up wrapping paper?  Perhaps, you can get your groceries while you are there and save on time.
  2. Take Inventory.  Whether you are at work or at home... what do you need for the holiday season?  Look around and make sure you don't over spend.  You could possibly have tape hiding in a closet or you may already have garland from last year.
  3. RELAX. I know that sounds impossible but whether it be some quiet time in the car or an hour reading your favorite book... Give yourself a mental rest. If you give yourself the well deserved time to collect your self you'll be able to tackle the day!  Trust me bad decisions occur when you are tired emotionally and physically.
  4. Keep a positive attitude!  If you go shopping or to work with the mind set that every thing is all wrong then, it will be.  Go in with the attitude that you are going to achieve your goals and your results will be awesome.  Sure, most things don't go as planned but, have the confidence to over come any un-welcomed surprises.
  5. Eat well.  I know I sound like your mother but, you should eat at least 5 times a day.  You should eat breakfast + snack + lunch + snack + dinner.  Also, don't forget about your water!  Stay hydrated and well nourished so that you can have all the energy you need.
  6. Don't forget what the holiday season is about.  Remember, this is the time to be thankful for our blessings.  So think twice before you give a sales clerk an attitude over something mundane like their line moving too slow or not having the product you like in stock.  Retailers, think twice before treating people like they are just $$$, some people never make it out to your stores cause they live far away.  First impressions always last.
How do you prepare for the holiday season?

Horrifying Make Up Mistakes

To end Halloween Day I present to you the most HORRIFYING make up mistakes!!!!  My lovely friend Laura agreed to be my model for this post.  She's super funny and a good sport.  Click here to follow her on twitter!!   Way back in September, I asked via Facebook what you guys thought were the worst make up no-no's... so we took all of those comments and put them to work in 2 spectacular looks.

A.  MAKE UP THAT IS TOO DARK!! People, if its not your color... DON'T WEAR IT.              B. There is such a thing as TOO MUCH of a good thing.  Raccoon eyes and way to much blush doesn't look good on any one!!!  Remember blush is supposed to make you look more vibrant and healthy not like you are a porcelain doll.                                           C.  Dramatically lined lips.   Yuck!!  If you are going to use lip liner choose a shade that is only slightly darker.  Trust me you don't want to look like  like a clown!! Please, do not try to mimic a "chola" unless you are really a "chola".
D.  Over Drawn Lips.  Yes, we all want nice plump lips but there is a right and wrong way to go about this.  If you over draw your lips you look         more ridiculous than sexy.
E.  Hot mess Eye Liner. Whether you put way too much on or wing it out at the point where it looks like stage make up just quit it.!!  The purpose of eye liner is to make your lashes look fuller and to create a different shape to your eye.

Lesson of the Day:  If your make up is questionable then its probably not good.

Artist of the Month: DEV

DEV is pretty awesome. You may know her from her hit song "In the Dark" or from the song "Like a G6" but I feel like we are going to hear much more from her!  She is coming out with her debut album on Nov. 1st and so far I'm loving everything on it.  Her sound can be described as techno hop.  Most of her songs are perfect for a night out but she has others that are more mellow and sincere. Some people compare her to Ke$ha but she is not even close! Dev can actually sing! Lol sorry Ke$ha fans.

Halloween Look: Andy Warhol Painting

This is by far the most original Halloween look that I have come across.  You can really do up the look by putting a frame around your face and possibly showing up with some one dressed up like Andy Warhol.  I got the idea from Monroe Misfit Makeup.  She is an AMAZING make up artist, one of the best in my opinion.  She did an Andy Warhol painting look as Marilyn Monroe.  She has toooons of other great looks on her website... really worth your while. Monroe Misfit Website <--- A Must See

What You Will Need:
  1. Pink Face Paint or Pink Powder (I'm using Snazaroo Face Painting Kit: Rainbow)
  2. Black Kohl Eyeliner (Avon)
  3. Vivid Blue Eye Shadow (Coastal Scents 88 Eye Shadow Palette)
  4. Bright Red Lipstick (NYX lipgloss in Plump Red & Cargo Lipstick in Maria)
You can always substitute colors to meet your preference, just have fun!  Remember the goal is to look like a piece of pop art out of Warhol's studio. :)

Original Photo
How to:
  1. Start with the base.  I recommend using a sponge for the most efficient application.  Cover all areas of  your face, ears and neck except for eye sockets and lips.  You are more than welcome to contour. I opted not to because I wanted to look cartoony.
  2. Put down an eye shadow base for long lasting effects. I started with a darker blue and put eye shadow all the way up to my brows.  I then went over it with a vibrant sky blue for some added dimension.  Be sure to get eye shadow on the sides of your nose and give it a round look.  Then, apply eye liner!!  Liz Taylor's eye liner was slightly winged so I mimicked that. For an extra intense look, apply black eye liner to your water line, under eye and across the lids.
  3. Eye Brows!!!  Okay, so I went super dramatic with this. Elizabeth Taylor is known for her gorgeous dark brows so I made mine super thick and dark.  Just be sure you plan out your shape well cause its really hard to go back and touch up the make up.
  4. Last step... the lips.  This is super easy. Just apply a bright red or pink lipstick and go over it with an equally bright color. :)

Halloween look: 1920's Flapper or Native American?

When I originally did this look... I aimed for a 1920's, silent film star make up look.  When I showed my mother and my boyfriend they thought I was trying to be a Native American but that may be because of the feather I was wearing and the fact that I have tan skin... :)  Either way, I hope this look inspires you to do a fun look for Halloween. Minus the blush, I think this would also be a nice, dramatic look for a night out.

*Great accessories to pair with this look:  Awesome pearls, Garter, Long Cigarette, Fake Beauty Mark, and a short bob with bangs wig!

What You Need - What I Used:
  • Foundation - L'oreal True Match (If its slightly lighter that's better)
  • Powder - L'oreal True Match (The more matte the look, the better)
  • Eye Brow Pencil or Wax - Benefit Eye brow Zing
  • Black Eyeliner - kohl pencil preferred (Avon)
  • Super Matte Pink Blush - Coastal Scents Palette (think stage make up)
  • Smokey Matte Natural Eye Shadows- Devil May Wear MAC pallete (plums and deep browns)
  • Deep Burgundy Lipstick- Rosary by Kat Von D

How To:
  1. Apply Foundation. Make sure that you get your skin tone as even as possible.  Matte foundations are the best.
  2. Darken Eye Brows... you don't want to make them appear fuller just more defined.  So just fill in sparse areas.
  3. Eyes!  Okay so you want to do an all over color first.  So, take your lightest shade and apply it all over the eye and bring it up as high as you can.  Next take your deepest color and apply it all over the outer v.  This is going to make it more dramatic.
  4. Use eyeliner to line your upper lid, water line and please feel free to tight line. ;)
  5. So, back in the 20's a defined, pointy cupid's bow and a dark lip was the trend.  It may be easier for some to use a stiff lip brush to make the shape... if you are okay with direct application just take your time and be precise.

Halloween Look: Genie

GENIE LOOK

This look was SUPER easy to do.  If you want to do something pretty that usually isn't over done... I would recommend this. I am actually thinking that I may end up doing this look for the Halloween party I'll be attending this year.

What you will need:
  • Mac Paint Pot - Bare Study
  • Geek Chic Cosmetic Eye Shadows- Little Albatross & Inevitable Betrayal or any shimmer dark blue and olive green shadow
  • The Body Shop Eye Shadow- 08 (Not sure if they still make this product) I would recommend any white eye shadow that has blue or green reflex in it.
  • Benefit High Beam Highlighter or Frosty Lip Gloss
  • Urban Decay Eye Liner- Ransom & Graffiti or any vibrant  purple and green eye liner
  • Extras: You can add false lashes and glue on diamonds to the ends of eye liner for more glam.
You can do any color combination of your choice. Its strictly up to you! :)  Just have fun with it.

Steps:
  1. You can put on foundation/concealer to cover up any blemishes that you don't want any one to see.  Next, apply Bare Study to your entire face. This is a great base and will stay on a very long time.
  2. Apply the white with green reflex eye shadow on top of the Bare Study. This will add more sparkle and give your skin a fantastical look.
  3. Apply Little Albatross eye shadow on your brows. Extend your brows farther then you normally would.  You can also make them thicker for a more exotic flare.
  4. Eyes!  Take your green eye liner and apply it on your entire lid. Extend the liner down towards the bridge your nose and out past your usual wing.  Then take the purple eye liner and tracer around all of the green. Be sure to get your water line and line under your eyes!  You can also add your falsies and diamonds at this point.
  5. Contouring is always a pain but it gives your face more dimension which is especially great for costume make up. I like to do a "3" on each side of my face. Get the hollows your cheeks the sides of the fore head and your jawline.
  6. For the lips take a frost color and apply. This is going to act like a paste for the blue shadow we will dust on top. This will ensure staying power and will also make your lips look a little metallic.
Easy isn't it?  By the way the turban you see in the pictures is actually some pajamas... I just wrapped it around my head and added a pin.  If you'd like to make your own I would go to the fabric shop and pin away!  Also, you can get some fun feathers and place a pin on top.

Artist of the Month: Best Coast

Source: Indie Rock Cafe
Ali Koehler, Bobb Bruno, Bethany Cosentino
(Source: Indie Rock Cafe)
Besides liking the group's out right love for cats... I'm just really digging their sound.  You guys know how much I love indie/retro music so when I heard Best Coast's music I instantly became a fan.  The band is composed of three members: Bethany Cosentino (Vocals), Bobb Bruno (Bass), and Ali Koehler (Drums).  What makes Best Coast unique is their use of low fidelity recording or lo-fi.  That pretty much means that they purposely distort the sound quality of their recording to render it a more raw or retro feel.  I'm also guessing that their name is all about the Pacific Coast (cause they are from CA, lol) and is a nod to their surfer sound.  They are picking up a lot of steam right now especially since they released their video for "Our Deal" which was directed by Drew Barrymore and features Miranda Crosgrove, Chloe Moretz, and Tyler Posey--- link to video will be below.

The songs that I demand you check out by them are: "Our Deal" "Boyfriend" "When I'm With You" " and  "Crazy For You".  You can check out more of their music and videos on their OFFICIAL SITE.

Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos Look

To kick off the month of October I wanted to do a Halloween look. I will probably do 4 looks total so if you have any ideas please be sure to leave me a comment and hopefully I can do those looks for you!  This one was really fun. I have a video below that'll show you everything.

What You Need:
  1. Face Paint. I used a face painting kit by Snazaroo that I ordered through Amazon.com
  2. Assortment of synthetic brushes/sponge for application.
  3. Kohl pencil in black and white
  4. Eyeshadow- in all colors you will be using
How to (video will be below):
  1. Start off by painting entire face white. You can leave your eye area bare as well as your nose. Be sure to cover your mouth with white paint.
  2. Create circles around your eyes and fill in. If you don't have black face paint that is okay. You can use an eyeliner or gel liner to fill in.
  3. Take an eyeliner and fill in your water line.  You can also try to get areas that are hard to reach with a brush.
  4. Next, make a triangular shape on your nose. Be sure to fill in between and around your nostrils.
  5. The mouth is my favorite part. I dont like the way mine came out but you can play around with it. Make a horizontal line across the inner portion of your lips(i used face paint but eye liner will work best. Be sure to make it thick enough to see when your mouth is closed. Bring the line out past your mouth.  You can put accents on the ends like an arrow, swirl or heart.  Next, make your vertical lines.
  6. Take a white eyeliner pencil and fill in white portions of mouth. This will ensure staying power and will really emphasize the mouth.
  7. Next, draw accents around your face. For my forehead I started out with a heart and had a spider web coming out of it.  I also added dots above my eyes and swirls underneath them.
  8. Color time!  Take a color of your choice and fill in where you like. I accented the outer portions of my eye with color and put a flower on my chin.
  9. Once you are done accenting everything go in with your eye shadow to pack in more texture and staying power.
  10. Last step is the most important... go back and fill in any spots that look bare.

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week: Day 8

Yesterday was the last day of NYFW Spring 2012 RTW.  So many great shows, designers, models, make up, collections... it was great.  I really wish that I could've been present for some of these shows.  One day. Maybe. Looking back, if I had to pick out my favorite collection it would be Badgley Mischka's. Again, this is all based on personal taste and what simply made me feel giddy about clothing. The most memorable collections to me are Hevre Ledger by Max Azria and Narciso Rodriguez. As far as trends go, I expect to see shopping mall stores filled with clothing that have geometrical touches... whether it be print, cut outs, or stitching.  I'm confident that you will also see many pant suits, chiffon, floral prints, and jewel tones mixed with metallics and natural hues.

The following are my favorite pieces that were flaunted on the catwalk on Day 8.  All pictures were taken from elle.com.  They have been a great source for the latest news on Fashion Week.

Calvin Klein

Naeem Khan

Ralph Lauren

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week: Day 7

Yesterday the cat walks in New York brought us to a couple of different places... we went on a safari with Michael Kors, back to the 50's and 60's with Anna Sui and Norma Kamali, and finally J. Mendel took us to a world of asymmetry and stripes.  The highlights of each show are shown below, all pictures are from Elle.com
